The rise of a second-hand marketplace for bakers: Rebake
In 2023, Tosin turned an idea sparked by frustration into a thriving platform that’s transforming how bakers engage with their tools and each other. Rebake, a dedicated marketplace for pre-owned bakeware, cookbooks, and baking tools, is more than just an app—it's a celebration of baking, community, and sustainability.
Tosin’s journey began with a silicone madeleine mould and a moment of inspiration: if fashion could have its own second-hand platforms, why not baking? What followed was a seamless blend of her professional expertise, love for baking, and commitment to a sustainable future.
Through Rebake, Tosin has created a space where bakers—whether professionals or hobbyists—can declutter, discover, and share, all while reducing waste and rethinking consumption. With its core values rooted in circularity and connection, Rebake isn’t just about tools; it’s about stories, traditions, and the joy of passing along a piece of your baking journey to someone else.
In this interview, Tosin shares her vision for Rebake, the inspiration behind its launch, and how a simple, heartfelt idea evolved into a community-driven movement for bakers everywhere.
What is Rebake and how does it work?
Rebake is an online platform, accessible through a mobile app, designed for buying, selling, and exchanging pre-owned bakeware, cookbooks and baking tools. Created by bakers, for bakers, it’s a dedicated space where enthusiasts, professionals, and hobbyists can discover quality tools, declutter their collections, and embrace more sustainable baking practices.
More than just a baker-to-baker marketplace, Rebake is about building a vibrant community of bakers united by their love for baking and sustainability.
What inspired you to start Rebake, and how did your identify the need for a pre-owned bakeware marketplace?
In 2023, I discovered the world of online second-hand marketplaces and quickly became a dedicated fan. Like many, I had fallen into the cycle of binge shopping and overconsumption, inadvertently contributing to the fast fashion industry. Determined to make a change, I began aligning my lifestyle with more sustainable shopping practices. Over time, this mindfulness naturally extended to another significant part of my life—baking.
My love for baking began during my university days in 2014. What started as a hobby soon grew into a passion, leading me to study Pastry & Culinary Management at Le Cordon Bleu in London. This passion opened doors to roles in bakeries, hotels, and even a Michelin-starred restaurant. Along the way, I amassed a substantial collection of bakeware, cookbooks, and tools.
One day, I decided to list a silicone madeleine mould on a second-hand app I’d been using. To my surprise, the listing was taken down because the platform only catered to fashion. That moment sparked an idea: why not create a dedicated space for bakers to buy and sell pre-owned tools? And that’s how Rebake was born.
(Fun fact: I still have the screenshot from that moment!)
I love how you're promoting circularity and sustainability through Rebake. What role does sustainability play in Rebake's business model?
Sustainability is at the core of Rebake's mission and business model.
We are at a pivotal moment where recognising and addressing environmental challenges is no longer optional—it’s essential. Each of us plays a role in shaping a more sustainable future, and my focus is on championing circularity. As I mentioned earlier, my personal experiences led me to this path.
With Rebake, I hope to inspire others to adopt this mindset and actively contribute to meaningful change—all while celebrating our shared love for baking. It’s a true win-win!
What has been your most surprising or memorable experience since launching Rebake?
How does someone with no tech background, no coding knowledge, and no experience in the tech industry manage to launch an app? The answer: incredible people! Rebake wouldn’t exist without the support and brilliance of my community. Every step—assembling a team, seeking guidance from mentors, and receiving constant encouragement—has been possible thanks to the amazing individuals around me, including many I met during this journey. For that, I am deeply grateful.
From skilled developers and creative designers to supportive friends and family, I’ve had the privilege of working with talented people who helped transform my vision into reality. This experience has been both humbling and inspiring, a testament to how the biggest challenges can be overcome when you have the right people by your side and trust the process.
That’s why community will always be at the core of Rebake. I’m passionate about connecting with others and am constantly inspired by what we can achieve together. The magic of collaboration is something I’ll always cherish as Rebake continues to grow.
What would you say is the most underrated benefit of buying or selling pre-owned bakeware?
The sense of connection it creates within the baking community. Beyond being eco-friendly and budget-friendly, exchanging pre-loved often carries a touch of personal history and allows bakers to share stories, traditions, and knowledge. For example, I’ve listed some cookbooks on the app that still have my baking notes and bookmarks tucked inside. I’ve left them there intentionally, as a small nudge of encouragement or inspiration for whoever receives them. It’s a special way to share a piece of my baking journey with someone else.
On the Rebake app, we’ve also introduced a feature called 'Rebake Joy,' where sellers can share recipes associated with the bakeware they list. This feature allows sellers to pass on not just the tools but also the joy, creativity, and inspiration that come with them, fostering meaningful connections through the shared passion of baking!
I'm dying to use Rebake in the US! Do you have any plans for future expansion into other areas?
It's so exciting to hear your enthusiasm for Rebake—thank you! While we’re currently focused on growing and refining our platform in our initial market of the UK, the idea of bringing Rebake to the US is incredibly inspiring. We’d absolutely love to share our platform with baking enthusiasts around the world someday. Your support means so much and helps keep dreams of future growth alive!
What values are at the heart of Rebake, and how do they guide your day-to-day operations?
At Rebake, our mission is built on four core pillars: Community & Collaboration and Sharing & Sustainability.
Created by bakers, for bakers, Rebake places community at the heart of everything we do. Our marketplace thrives because of the incredible people who make it special—baking enthusiasts who share our passion for creativity and circularity. We’re dedicated to providing meaningful value to this community, both through the app and beyond. We believe in fostering collaboration among baking enthusiasts, professionals, and hobbyists. Rebake is a space where connections are made, ideas are exchanged, and the love for baking continues to flourish.
Sustainability is just as integral to Rebake’s purpose. By creating a marketplace for pre-owned bakeware, we extend the lifecycle of tools, reduce waste, and lessen the environmental impact of overconsumption. Sharing is a natural part of this—whether it’s tools, recipes, or inspiration. Together, we can make baking more sustainable while building a community rooted in creativity and collaboration.
These principles guide every decision we make, shaping how we design our platform and engage with our users. They keep us focused on what truly matters: empowering bakers and advancing a circular future for the baking community.
If you could share a piece of advice with aspiring bakers and entrepreneurs, what would it be?
Protect your craft. I almost lost my spark while working in a high-pressure, unhealthy environment. Baking is a deeply personal and creative passion that comes from a unique place within us. Whether it’s your profession or your hobby, challenges are inevitable—but many, in my experience, can be avoided with a little self-reflection.
If you ever feel your spark dimming, take a step back, let go of what’s no longer serving you, and refocus on the parts of baking that bring you true joy. Reconnect with the magic that makes baking so special, and let it guide you toward a path that feels authentic and fulfilling. And most importantly, don’t forget to have fun with it!
What’s your favourite piece of bakeware you’ve ever owned, and why?
Right now, my chiffon cake tin is my absolute go-to—I find myself using it every week!
Chiffon cakes are such a textural delight—light, airy, and completely irresistible. They’re surprisingly easy to whip up, making them a favourite in my baking routine for both sharing and indulging.
As Tosin’s journey with Rebake shows, innovation often begins with a simple, heartfelt idea—one that grows into something far greater than imagined. By blending sustainability with a shared love for baking, Rebake has become a catalyst for change, proving that even the smallest tools can leave a meaningful impact.
Whether you’re a professional chef, a weekend baker, or simply someone who treasures the joy of sharing recipes and traditions, Rebake invites you to join a community where creativity, connection, and care come together. With its commitment to circularity and collaboration, Rebake is reshaping the baking world—one whisk, one mould, and one shared story at a time.
I am beyond excited for the launch of Rebake! Congrats Tosin.
Cheers,
Maya
